On Friday 20th November, Sunshine Restaurant at Curium Beach was packed to the rafters with people who had come along to support the first of local Ladies Choir, Achord's Grand Concerts. Achord began at the end of January this year and has since performed at various charity events across the island. On 20th November, Achord invited the newly formed Cyprus Brass band to perform alongside them, whilst also hosting the James Lambert Singers from Wrexham. North Wales.
With over 300 tickets sold for the event, the Choirs and Band raised a fantastic €2,221 for the Royal British Legion — extra chairs had to be put out as the audience piled into the restaurant that had been transformed into a formal Concert hall. The well established James Lambert Singers. who sing along to recorded backing tracks, entertained the audience with popular sing-along numbers such as Winter's Tale and a Neil Diamond medley. They were ably conducted by Mair Evans. The Cyprus Brass Band, led by Bandmaster Jamie McVicar, gave a rousing performance of ‘Come Follow t'Band' and then the more popular Madness song, ‘Baggy Trousers‘. Achord then gave their renditions of songs such as ‘Bring Him Home‘ from Les Miserables accompanied by Brass Quartet — always a tear-jerker, Leona Lewis and Snow Patro|'s ‘Run’, and than the tongue-twister that is ‘Rhythm Of Life‘ where accompanist Kath Millard was joined by Jamie McVicar for 4 hands on the piano!
Achord's Musical Director. Julie Edwards. said:
"The choir planned this concert as we knew that the James Lambert Singers were coming over to Cyprus and we wanted to create an opportunity to perform alongside them. For a bit of musical variety. we invited the Brass Band, knowing that this would also be their first performance since their conception in March of this year. I had no idea how well-supported and successful this concert was going to the and I'm absolutely stunned by the huge numbers that attended the concert and, more so. by the massive amount of money that was raised. This was a truly spectacular evening with the performers receiving a standing ovation following the joint performance of the Welsh hymn Tune, 'Calon Lan'. It was overwhelming, and now leaves Achord planning their next big Concert in the Republic of Cyprus."
Following this concert, Achord and the James Lambert Singers gave a free concert at the Louis Imperial Beach Hotel in Paphos, where a retiring collection for local Charity “One Dream One Wish” raised approximately €500 to help terminally ill children. Again, another brilliant evening of music finishing with a standing ovation and cries for more!
The James Lambert Singers have now flown back home to Wales but with their memories of a great musical week still fully alive — and with them planning their next visit.
Cyprus Brass Band is continuing to build up its repertoire and will be planning Its next performances in the coming months.
Achord can be seen performing next at the Limassol Marina Christmas Fayre on Sunday 6" December at 3.00pm, and then at Pissouri Square Christmas Carol Concert on Sunday 13th December at 5.00pm.
